Batik Strip Quilt - Done!

Happy February, everyone! How are your Oh, Hello Done! goals coming along?

To be honest, last week, I was on site at a client - I had zero time for quilting during the week making me really happy I got my quilt time (and goals done!) early in January. However, I did take a book to read and got one book read for this year, so that felt good. But, I did really miss having something to do with my hands - do I have any English Paper Piecers out there? I’ve been thinking about learning this form of quilting as that’s something I can take on the road (and a plane) with me. Love it, hate it, scared of it?

This last weekend though, I made up for it and got my quilt on, but I was ALL over the place!

I started on my challenge quilt for guild (Please excuse my lighting - it’s horrible after the sun goes down.)…

I changed my mind on the pattern I’m going to use for my February goal and started cutting and sewing that. I’m using Jaybird Quilt’s Science Fair pattern. I LOVE hexies (this could be a reason the EPP is fascinating me and trying to pull me in)!

Can we take a minute and look at that nesting? I’m becoming a convert to pressing seams open for piece work. The flatness of this block and the seam alignment had me geeking out! I was a bit proud of myself. It takes some getting used to feeling the seams nest this way, but I’m getting used to it and now have a better rip-out ratio than when I nest seams to the side! Oh, here’s the front of the block.

But, as I at there in my state of “I don’t know what I’m truly inspired to work on,” I pulled out a quilt I’ve needed to bind since this fall and finished it up. So, I present to you, my first finished quilt of 2020! I’m calling it Flipped Strips.

Missouri Star called their tutorial “Stack and Flip.” I made some changes and didn’t follow their pattern exactly. I had bought a pack of batik strips from Prairie Flower Crafts and it was half a Jelly Roll (21 strips). I used all the strips for mine and then picked where I liked to cut off two even portions. Then, I flipped the middle strip set to go the opposite direction of the other two.

I wasn’t blogging yet, but this summer, my mom said I couldn’t sew a quilt together in a day…this top was the result of her challenge. And, now it’s done! Xander’s been breaking it in, but I need to find a home for it. I had Prairie Flower quilt it with some hexies (are you sensing a theme here?) and I’m happy with how it turned out. It’ll be a nice little playmate for a little girl for sure.

Have any of you finished a top yet or one of your quilty goals? How’s February treating you? Give me a status update below.
