January Aurifil Color Builders Project Wrap-Up

I would like to report that my quilting this January is still going strong, but due to a nasty virus I came down with last week, I’ve slowed down.

So, yea me to getting my goals done at the start of the year/month!

This thing has been so nasty to kick - it is making me wish for spring even harder. Or maybe that’s the snow we got this weekend. Or both.

Anyway, it kept me from going home and to my Tucker Trimmer class and I’ve only gotten in one day of sewing in the past two weeks. Congested and tired is no way to go through life.

However, I managed to make it to The Fabric Chic and pick up my first monthly Aurifil Color Builders box. Last year I signed up and each month I get three spools of Aurifil thread and a block (pattern). We also got a nice case and fat quarters to kick off the year. I’m super excited to add more color to my thread collection - especially so I can quilt on my machine. I’m getting those supplies ready! The Color Builders theme this year is Italy.

January’s color set was Milan - three grays. I loved they were a more blue-toned gray. That middle fat quarter is my absolute favorite. After reviewing my pattern, I needed a forth color. So, I dug into my stash and found something to add a pop of color.

Milan is known for fashion and I thought the pink was a bright, quirky add that felt like I was paying some homage to the fashion roots in Milan. I know that it is a Free Spirit material, but I got the selvage that didn’t have the material information to give you much more than that.

This month’s block was designed by Blair Stocker of Wise Craft Handmade - she’s the designer for January. The pattern used square foundation paper pieces to help sew together 1 inch strips into blocks. Here’s my finished block!

I had one block that was a bit off, but overall, I’m really pleased with my finished block. My pink pattern blended very nicely with the grays and based on what I’ve seen for the other colors throughout the year, should go well with what is coming up later. Also, if you head over to the Aurifil blog, you can download each monthly pattern for free. I’ve linked up this month’s for you - go to the end of the post to get the download.

I saw The Fabric Chic post they have a few more spots available - this is a program you have to sign up for through a local quilt store. So, if you are in the KC area, it’ll be worth it to get in on the fun. The spools are the big ones, so you definitely get your money’s worth.
