July Wrap-Up - A Year of Stash and Scraps
My first month of using only my stash and scraps got off to a slow start. I worked hard in June to get my Little Forest Block of the Month caught up and then slowed down.
However, I’m still on track and July’s block, Stripped Pine, is done!
I used the color scheme that Shannon provided for the block and decided to pull out a piece of linen fabric I acquired before I kicked off this “experiment.” I have recently started to fall in love with linen fabrics and this felt like an easy, straight forward way to use them. I also found this cute mushroom fabric in my stash and it paired perfectly with the gingham. Plus, there are mushrooms in the forest, so of course I had to use them!
I don’t know what I did, but my middle piece ended at the right length called for by the pattern, so I didn’t have to add on the extra strips (nor did I cut them down just to resew them together). This block is so stinking cute. I’m thinking I will use solids again next month. I dove into my solid fat quarter stash for another potential project and yeah, I need to use some of that up!
I was going to try and participate in Lo & Behold’s Scrap Bash. However, when I was trying to pull fabrics and get inspired to start, the mojo wasn’t flowing. So, I’ve saved all the instructions and I’ll come back to the project later. Life is too short to force a project.
I worked on my pattern a bit. After a poll on Instagram, you all decided I should include instructions for using fat quarters. I was leaning that way, but needed the extra assistance to get me to the final decision. Thank you everyone that voted!
I wanted to keep with the color way I originally used for the first top I made following my instructions. I pulled all the background fabric from my stash as well as one of the purple and pink pieces. The rest I did go purchase (which is still ok according to my rules). I cannot wait to see how this turns out - especially since it will be all scrappy!
With the arrival of the Olympics, I have been glued to our TV. I decided I’d catch up on some English Paper Piecing (EPP) projects. I worked some on my Tula Pink Nova quilt, my Pirouette Quilt from Tales of Cloth, and some half inch hexie flowers.
My stitching is getting better the more I practice. However, I need some better lighting for when I sew on the couch.
I’d summarize July as a month about pulling projects out of my stash and spending time with them. That is still working from my stash and getting projects out the door. Albeit slowly as they are EPP projects.
It was good to slow down. I’m not ready for summer to end…well, maybe without all the heat advisories attached.
How was your sewing this July?
