September 2022 - Rowan Color Palette
I’ve been doing something exciting these past weeks. I signed up for Elizabeth Chappell’s Quilt Pattern Writing Course so I can get my pattern writing off the ground. I’ve been trying to write a pattern and publish them for as long as I’ve had this blog, but there’s been a lot that’s held me back.
As a part of the course, we’re working on branding and our niche. With this has come some refocus for my blog. So, you’ll be seeing some updates around here!
The first update is that I’ll be writing two monthly regular blog posts. The first will be a monthly review of my sewing progress and the other will be a monthly color palette post. These color palettes will be inspired by books I am reading or have read. I’ve been looking for a way to combine these two loves and thanks to Elizabeth, I think I’ve found it.
Not to mention a future project I hope to kick off in 2024!
But, without further ado, here’s September 2022’s Color Palette:
This color palette is inspired by the book, “The Rowan” by Anne McCaffery and I re-read it this September. This book was one of the first, if not the first science fiction book I read and got me hooked on the genre. This book is the first in a series of five and my mom had gifted me the second and third books. I’ve been wanting to read those, so I pulled this one out and add it to the “read” list for 2022.
The book is an easy read and a great way to get into science fiction as it doesn’t get too technical and is more about the Rowan’s life than technology. I rated the book 3.25 stars of 5 on Story Graph.
But, we’re here for the color! In addition to the palette, I’m going to give you a quilt block using the colors and as I can, a fabric pull. This month, to kick us off, I have both!
First, the fabrics - all of these are solids by Paintbrush Studio, with the exception of one:
Sky (light silver-blue for the Rowan’s hair)
Island (the teal of her tights)
Bright Aqua (blue of the Rowan’s dress)
Navy (book background)
Kona Pink Flamingo (Jupiter - the Rowan works on Jupiter’s moon, Callisto)
I worked these into an Ohio Star block this month.
The only downfall in making color palettes is that it’s been hard to stay focused on my class and not dig into making this into a full quilt.
I am excited to share this series for you - color and inspiration is all around us. I hope you’ll join me each month for a new palette and who knows, your next read!
