summer sampler week four

this week’s block was more traditional - half square triangles make up the majority of this week’s block, the victorian tile.

you’ll have to forgive the bad light - i’m relaxing at mom’s and I didn’t get an “official” picture taken before i left (this is what i get for quilting at night with bad life - i have to triple remind myself to do this).

i could’ve used my perfect half square triangle blocks, but i also do like using my perfect slotted trimmers and wanted to focus on working on my quarter inch steams, pressing, and sewing in a straight line when i draw it on (because in full disclosure - i don’t know what straight is to save me!). also, with each week being a different designer, i also like to focus on their methods to up my skill set - methods make sense in different ways to different people and that’s where sampler quilts and challenges like that i find helpful for me to refine and learn something from a different perspective.

i also need to be braver about cutting - my lines, while straight, didn't quite get to my border and I should’ve paid attention more to aligning to that versus just making a square cut. however, in my defense, my blocks usually end up short, so…there you have it!

i do think i will pull out my rulers/tools from deb tucker my mom gave me to help with flying geese, squares in squares, and other unit pieces now that i’m getting a better hand on all of this.

the green material we pulled for this continues to amaze me with how well the dots line up. the purple floral has too much pink and gets lost.

i haven’t spent a lot of time doing these more “traditional” blocks, but the more i make them, the more fun they are and have tons of potential. this isn’t my favorite block, but it grows on me the more i look at it.

i can tell my piecing and quarter inch seam are improving as the block challenge continues to go - i’m learning lots which is what i wanted with this challenge and my perfect half-square-triangle BOM.

i went to sip and sew with mom this weekend at our favorite store, prairie flower crafts. i pulled fabric for “bob” and he’s ready to go. i also started playing with deb tucker’s “corner beam” trimmer tool (the results of that will be up later this week). i’m really excited to show you all this one!
