summer sampler week three

well, i worked on my week three block really at the last minute. i had more “life” than quilting last week and worked on this one sunday,

this week focused on improvisation sewing. we made material squares and drew random lines on the squares to guide our sewing and cut from. i did learn that for this, i didn’t want to get my lines too slanted - we needed to keep the strips a certain width and length - and with my first block i cut (pun intended) it a little close. once you made your strip sets, you arranged them randomly and then sewed them together.

then came trimming done your strip sets to be a quarter of a square (a triangle). so, i learned a new trick with my square ruler!

then, you added some contrast with white strips down the middle. this was the smallest strip i’ve sewn and the BIGGEST learning i’m taking is really sewing in a straight line and a quarter inch seam.

this block didn’t require as much precision as the others, but you did have to focus on where you placed your ruler for the final cuts - it was a bit nerve racking!

i did have quite a bit of scrap after i cut my triangle. so, since it was an improve block and wonky, I decided to sew down the long edge of my triangle cuts and then square up what i had. this got me four four-and-a-half inch squares. i’m thinking coasters for now - i also had from my green and blue a one inch trip that i think i’ll make into book marks.

i think i had the most fun with this block for sure - i love how bold it is in comparison to the others. it is bright and cheery and right there in your face…in a good way.
