The Sewing Table - December 2022

The sewing table these past few months really haven’t been a table, but more of a couch. And by that, I mean I’ve been working on a few English Paper Piecing (EPP) projects rather than you, know, things I need to at the sewing machine.

While work hasn’t been busy, it has taken a lot of brain capacity and there hasn’t been a lot of space for sitting down at my machine. So, I decided to pull out a few of my EPP projects as, well, they need worked on too and I could do that while on the couch watching TV.

I’ve found EPP addicting - I also find it easier to get into a rhythm than at my sewing machine. One night I turned on the new season of “The Crown” on Netflix, got out my project, and the next thing I knew, it was 4 am!

I’ve got two projects in process - the first I inherited from a friend. This project she inherited and she doesn’t do EPP. It is in no way material I’d normally select, but I figured it would be a good project to develop my skills on and the project gets done. So far, I have five blocks done - these are called Lucy Boston Crosses. These shots I took before I sewed them together (so I could remember how I laid them out).

Xander and I made a quick trip to my mom’s for Thanksgiving and EPP was a great project to take. I could sit and talk with family, sew, and I didn’t have to haul my sewing machine!

The only thing I've done is bought some white low-volume prints from Laundry Basket Quilts because with how I’m planning the Crosses, I’m using more white than the original owner.

I’ve also pulled back out my Tula Pink Nova quilt. Now, this one I’m probably making a huge mistake by cutting and laying out as I go, but I am! I don’t remember the line for the material…I bought it a few years ago, and I’m crossing my fingers I’ve got enough! Here’s the progress so far.

We made a quick trip to our art museum, the Nelson-Atkins to see their Art Deco special exhibit. I love Art Deco and the 1920/1930 time period. Here’s a few shots from our exhibit - it was so easy to be inspired for future projects.

Let’s close with some exciting news - I worked more on my quilt top for my first ever pattern! I have all the blocks made and hope to piece it soon. Then, I’ll finishing writing the instructions, put the first pattern draft together, and then make a second top. It has been exciting to see this start to come together. I’ve caught a few mistakes with the first pass, but that’s why you test, right? I’ll close out this month’s wrap-up with a few sneak peeks for you.

What do you all think? Excited? It’s fun putting the pieces and colors together. I can’t wait to show you all the final product.

I’m wrapping up December with reviewing how to make the monthly color palettes better, starting a newsletter, bringing my business “online”, and getting my first pattern released. 2023 will see hopefully many new things - it’s time to get excited for the new year!
