Finished Quilt Interruption - Supernova

Welcome to 2022 at Oh, Hello Jenny! I’m starting this year off with a completed quilt to kick-off what I hope to be a super productive year.

For Christmas, I was commissioned by my “day job” to make a quilt for our founder (my boss - we are a small company). I immediately said “yes” and started looking for a pattern that would work with the biggest constraints I was given; using only our logo colors and getting our logo somewhere in the quilt. This meant I was restricted to only using three colors - a teal blue, orange, and grey. DISCLAIMER - I was given permission to use our logo, I did not break any trademark or copyright law. Now that the legal stuff is out of the way, let’s get on to the fun stuff, like the fabric pull below. I had some great help from Prairie Point Quilt & Fabric Shop to help me start with the base logo colors and built out from there.

I pulled four color variations of the blue and orange, decided to use grey for the binding, and white background. Then, we spotted this great analytical looking fabric for the background. The pieces were coming together. I settled on using a pattern from a recent Triple Play Video from Missouri Star Quilt Company. Misty Doan created the Supernova pattern and it looked like a quick project (timing with this being for Christmas) and easy to alter to get the logo worked into the design.

This pattern is made up of square, half square triangle, and a half square triangle variation (I’m not sure what it is called when you have the quarter square triangle in the corner and half square on the other side - might need to learn this!). I could also user my Tucker Trimmer to trim down and stay precise.

I used the proposed layout in the pattern and over a weekend when my kiddo was with his dad, borrowed his bed for my design wall. I lost being able to have my design wall hanging on the wall, so I have to get creative in the design wall department. I altered the middle of the star to be white squares as that is where I put the logo.

Next, it was off to the quilter - this time I used Sew in 2 Quilts in Hutchinson. She’s super quick, has a great eye for design, and…squared up my quilt for me. We chose a cute breezy line with circles.

I appliquéd the logo into the center prior to quilting and then requested it to not be quilted over. I simply printed a large copy of our logo out, traced it on to Steam-A-Seam 2 and topstitched it down.

Graphic designers sure know what they’re doing - I am so pleased with how well only using essentially three colors looked in this quilt.

I will likely use this quilt pattern again - it is an easy sew with a design that would work for any occasion. It is also a nice throw size making it great for a baby and/or gift quilt. However, I do feel there is a lot of waste. The pattern called for a Layer Cake and Yardage - you only use a few pieces from the Layer Cake and the material requirements for yardage are based on the fact that Missouri Star only cuts at quarter yard increment. If I make this again, I’ll likely use scraps in place of a Layer Cake. Extra yardage for background I don’t mind as much, but too much waste is tough for me on patterns. Also, you will want to buy the pattern for the yardage - the material requirements picture with the YouTube video is incorrect.

Here’s the final product! My boss was in love with it and it immediately found it’s home.

Cheers to a quilt filled New Year, everyone!
