kinship sampler - 100 days 100 blocks
as we are all aware, my latest addiction is blocks and sew alongs. the kinship sampler and doing 100 blocks in 100 days was a bit from instragram and a bit from my modern quilt guild here in KC. you gotta watch out for those quilt guilds - they are nothing but enablers.
so…jenny…with your summer sampler (yes i’m behind), and your half-square-triangle block of the month, why in the world would you want to take up another sewing challenge - let alone one block…everyday…for 100 days.
first, some details. this sew/quilt-a-long is hosted by the gnome angel and you can pick up the pattern here (it ends up being around $21 US). next, i want to get in a habit of sewing daily. these blocks end up being either 8 x 8 or 4 x 8 - they’re small. these blocks (so far) haven’t taken the multiple hours…sometimes days…my summer sampler and half-squares have. third, i can sew ahead and still participate in this challenge; this fourth of july i ended up sewing five blocks since, as of now, i’m heading back to mom’s (love you mama!). also, it’s super cute! and finally, i’m learning a new technique. that technique is foundation paper piecing.
after working on my half-squares, i have enjoyed the precision i’m getting by using paper to help me cut and sew in a straight line. i have straight line issues - who’d have thought it! i can’t even blame wine! so, i picked up the foundation paper pieced (FPP) version of the pattern so i could learn the method, practice sewing and cutting in a straight line, learn my machine, and (hopefully) become more precise.
i may do a FPP how-to post later, but for now, here’s my first five blocks! let me know which one is your favorite in the comments - mine is block five!
while i love having my solid colors in these blocks, after making block five, i do wish i would’ve trusted my first thought of doing this fully scrappy, because block five turned out better than i expected.
here’s a pick of the first five all together!
the materials i’m using are the new tilda line and moda grunge on the solids. let me know too if you decide to join in - i’d love to see how you work the blocks.
i hope you all have had a wonderful fourth!
